- As in ancient myths, the rise of the hero sits within a gendered arena where feminine support is necessary for success. This chapter engages with these ancient mythic threads and their timeless character as evidenced in Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Woven through these representations are the ancient myths of the Labyrinth of Crete and the Golden Fleece that supply narrative support for gendered contests in games for the throne. Characters such as Lucilla and Cersei, both from ruling families, are entangled in the power and domination of patriarchal systems. The contrast between these women, as they navigate the twists and turns of the political labyrinth as well as their broken threads of love, leads to differing consequences. Whereas Gladiator presents audiences with one main feminine character by which to measure success, Game of Thrones provides varied encounters with women in games for the throne. However, like the ancient Labyrinth of Crete, those who enter the political labyrinth find themselves in a contest just as deadly.
